Sacred Snuff Kuripe Animal Totem Serpentine Jaguar

Choosing and caring for a kuripe

Customers often ask whether to choose a simple kuripe or a carved stone one. Our answer has usually begun with personal preference: the material, the shape, the artwork you feel connected with, and how you want to care for the piece.

Compare practical details

Our simple kuripes are lightweight and approximately 6–7cm in size. The serpentine animal-totem kuripes are approximately 10–11cm long and around 50g. These are the dimensions listed for those offerings; individual handmade pieces can vary.

Stone offers a different weight and feel from bamboo. Some people are drawn to the detailed carvings; others prefer a simpler piece. Neither choice removes the need to consider the fit between your mouth and nostril.

Care follows the material

Our care recommendations distinguish stone from bamboo rather than suggesting the same routine for both. For a simple stone piece, we described rinsing with water and a little mild soap. Bamboo was treated as a dry-care material, with a small soft brush to remove buildup from the passage.

Keep that distinction in mind, and check the construction of your own piece. Beadwork, glue, wood, bone or combined materials may need a different approach from an undecorated stone applicator. Do not assume a method described for one material applies to every kuripe or tepi.

After cleaning a washable piece, allow it to dry completely before putting it away. Handle carved ends carefully, and store the applicator where it will be protected from knocks. If a passage seems blocked or you are uncertain about cleaning a decorated piece, ask us about that specific design.

The artwork has its own story

The animal meanings and maker details belong to the individual product descriptions. We keep those stories with the pieces, so you can explore the craftsmanship as well as the practical dimensions.
